Cryogenic treatment

Cryogenic treatment for improved material properties

Transformation of retained austenite

As you know, low-temperature treatment, added directly to the normal quenching process, transforms the residual austenite. By controlled atomization of liquid nitrogen in the treatment chamber with circulation pump, any cooling profile can be carried out to -150 °C; in special cases to -190 °C.

This increases hardness and cutting accuracy. Parts with small tolerances remain dimensionally accurate because there is no folding of the microstructure due to volume growth under load. Deficiencies in process control, which currently still exist in vacuum carbonation, are corrected. Linde offers a complete CRYOFLEX® range of standardized hardware, such as cases, cabinets and tunnels. We can also offer customized solutions. Handling of individual parts, bulk goods or continuous belt transport are all possible. So that you can see for yourself, we offer a test at your premises with your parts. We will lend you a crate for this purpose. To prevent rusting, the heating is performed immediately in the crate.

If you also want to temper the parts in the same step, this is also possible. However, this is not possible in the test case.

CRYOFLEX® Cryogenic Handling - Equipment

Linde has developed various solutions for cryogenic treatment. The CRYOFLEXTM CCF freezer incorporates the latest developments in process and manufacturing technology. The freezer is designed for batch operation, for which a continuous operation system is not suitable.

The CRYOFLEXTM CBF freezer is manufactured in different sizes for relatively small volumes, according to customer requirements. To prevent rusting, heating is carried out directly in the box. The CRYOFLEXTM CTF cooling tunnel is integrated into the production line in an in-line process immediately before the tempering process.

CRYOFLEX® Cryogenic Treatment - Rest Austenite Transformation

For certain applications, cryogenic treatment is an important part of the overall heat treatment process. When hardened steels and components are treated at low temperatures, the residual austenite is transformed into martensite and the following material properties are improved:

  • Hardness and strength
  • Wear resistance
  • Dimensional stability
