Dry ice

Pulling the plug on conventional cooling

Carbon dioxide (CO2) snow, also known as dry ice, is a very effective and easy-to-use cooling medium with a wide variety of potential applications. It is ideal for cooling dairy, meat, frozen and other perishable food products during transportation.

It is also invaluable in food processing, for instance to cool heat-sensitive materials during grinding, to shrink-fit foods and to vacuum-pack cold traps. Dry-ice pellets are ideal for blast-cleaning machinery. And when dry ice sublimates, it turns directly into gas – without passing through a liquid phase – which can be an exciting special effect at a party. At atmospheric pressure, liquid carbon dioxide converts to solid carbon dioxide snow at ¬79ºC (¬109ºF). The snow can then be compressed under high pressure to form blocks or pellets.

Properties of dry ice

  • Flavourless and odourless
  • No residue, thanks to sublimation
  • Germ and bacteria-free
  • Non-poisonous
  • Non-flammable
  • Easy to control because it is heavier than air
  • Does not require a power supply to release/maintain cooling power
  • More than three times colder than water ice

Abrasive dry ice blasting

Dry ice contains no water, so using the dry ice blasting technique results in an amazingly dry cleaning process. And it therefore does not add anything to the removed fraction and thus saves the environment.

The dry ice pellets used for blasting are rice grain-shaped, with a diameter of 2-3 mm. And a length of 3-10 mm. Dry ice is the 'solid phase' of carbon dioxide (CO2), and besides dry ice blasting it is widely used as a cooling agent, especially in the food industry. As of a certain purchase quantity and a certain purchase pattern, it is interesting for you to produce your own dry ice. This way you are guaranteed to have dry ice available at all times. Dry ice pellets are produced in a pelletizer that is fed with liquid CO2 from a storage tank. What is not used immediately is stored in well insulated containers. For on-site production of dry ice you therefore need a pelletizer and a storage tank for liquid carbon dioxide. As well as connecting piping and a number of safety provisions.
